Vogue Australia: An Affair in Africa

For December, VOGUE Australia decided to brighten things up with colors and exotic patterns. The issue features actress Isabel Lucas and model Katie Fogarty in bold mixtures of blues, reds, and yellows. The tribal prints and headwraps come from the runways of Giorgio Armani, Diane von Furstenberg, Maison Martin Margiela, Balenciaga, Burberry, and Pucci.
Simply looking at these images photographed by Max Doyle make me feel warm -- I'm totally wishing that I could be experiencing some Australian or African summer right now!

Described as a talented young designer with a fresh look on things, Thakoon has been evolving and growing in this tough industry. The film and music industries know how to throw a series of red carpet events throughout the year, but the fashion industry also puts on a very important event: the Council of Fashion Designer of America Awards.
Naomi Watts presented the prestigious Womenswear Designer of the Year Award to Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez of Proenza Schouler. Lady Gaga showed up in a green bob and -obviously- won Fashion Icon of the Year. The Accessories Designer of the Year went to Alexander Wang, and the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award to none other than Marc Jacobs. Winner or not, however, everyone showed up looking glamorous and stylish to the event. Here are my favorite red carpet looks:

Her most recent gig was styling Chanel's fall 2011 campaign, which features model Freja Beha Erichsen. Photographed by none other than the famous Karl Lagerfeld, the campaign used a regular photobooth as the backdrop.

Along with many people that have given this campaign a huge accolade, I love the creative idea behind it. My favorite is Freja's lace number and her seductive gaze toward the camera from the side.

It makes sense that Bottega Veneta's Resort 2012 collection is close to perfection, considering that the designer Tomas Maier lives part-time in Palm Beach. The designs show a perfect balance between modernity and exoticism. Maier also managed to reach the appropriate level of sexiness for the summer season. I love the bright pop of colors - the hot pink and turquoise especially. Any stylish woman would opt for one of the pieces this resort season.

If there is anything that Oscar de la Renta is known for, it's his ability to combine the casual with the elegant in his designs. The powerful sense of femininity carried in his pieces convey exactly what womanhood means at the moment in fashion.
According to Style.com, de la Renta was inspired by Picasso for his resort 2012 collection - he mixed geometric patterns that resonate the Cubist concepts of Picasso's artwork. There are a lot of interesting looks from the runway, including the accentuated headgear and subtle details of brooches and belt buckles. What I enjoyed in particular was the combination of vibrant colors and defined silhouettes that in turn creates a sense of chic and vigor together.

Best Dressed: 64th Cannes Film Festival

Next to the Met Gala, the annual film festival in Cannes produces some of the best and original red carpet looks. What I really like about the Cannes Film Festival is that, as an international event, it draws on some of the most fashionable people from different parts of the world. You can see the varying tastes in red carpet gowns by looking at Asian actresses like Gong Li, or the famous Bollywood star Rai Bachchan.

My favorite to keep an eye on was actress Rachel McAdams, who went through a series of outfit changes throughout the event. She was bold and distinguished in every outfit she wore, and I commend her for breaking the conventions by opting for a fitted bustier and high-waisted trousers instead of a gown. Gisele Bundchen appeared at the Robin Hood Foundation Gala in this black tweed and lace dress from Emanuel Ungaro's Spring 2011 collection. Gisele looks absolutely stunning in this dress. It flaunts her silhouette and shows skin in some places and hides enough amounts in other places to balance it out. Everything about this look is perfect: the dress, the Louboutins, the slicked back hair, and the red lips.

Cannes - Chanel Cruise Show

So, aside from the fabulous resort collection, we saw a lot of attendees in fabulous clothes. The most notable one probably was Blake Lively. As the face of Chanel and Lagerfeld's muse, she showed up in Chanel haute couture. Although the length of that skirt is quite risque, Blake can get away with it because a) her overall outfit looks good and b) her legs are gorgeous.

Another favorite of mine was Clemence Poesy. She has great style and that is completely evident in her choice of outfit at the show

Poppy Delegvigne also pulled it off with the Chanel tweed short suit but that pastel pink dress on Alexa is questionable.

Rachel Bilson looks stunning, especially with that touch of leather. I do, however, wish she would've accessorized more.

And, of course, how can we not appreciate the fashionable ex-Editor of VOGUE, Carine Roitfeld? Although she's left her position, she's been keeping busy with many freelance projects. It's also nice to know that her impeccable sense of style hasn't diminished.

Chanel Resort 2012 Collection

Chanel's 2012 Cruise show had more than enough desirable resort looks. I was going through a slideshow of all the runway images from the collection and ended up with some 20 top ones. It was definitely a painful experience trying to narrow my choices to just 10.

Well, needless to say, Karl Lagerfeld has done it again. Genius as he is, he knows how to create beautiful, trend-setting yet classic looks. I'm quite enjoying the predominant neutral tones and the subtle floral patterns.

Lagerfeld said of the collection: "This is about the women of Cannes, women who mix bathing suits with real pearls and diamonds...After all, you can't wear fakes into the water."

The May 2011 editorial for Mexican Marie Claire displays the model Katharina Rembi in simple black and white designs.

It's refreshing to see an editorial with a minimalist approach amidst the obsession many magazines seem to have with multiple colors, patterns, and textures. I especially adore that Michael Kors suit with the black fedora. It's rare to see a woman bravely donning a white suit - and even rarer to have her pull it off. This issue reminds us that sometimes it's best to go back to basics.

There's nothing exciting or fresh about this cover look and it just simply doesn't convey the vintage-chic look that Alexa embodies.

The gala was held to kick off the "Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty" exhibition that opens this Wednesday, May 5th. The exhibition will feature about 100 ensembles and 70 accessories created by McQueen from 1992 to last spring.

In his honor, many celebrities showed up at the Met donning various Alexander McQueen pieces. And of course, because of the eccentricity and uniqueness that McQueen's designs carry, it's easy to say that all of them stood out - and hard to pinpoint who worked it the best.

The Met Gala last night had lots of exciting - and interesting - looks on the red carpet but here is the list of my personal favorite. It was no surprise to anyone that Blake Lively appeared in a Chanel couture gown, and Diane Kruger knows exactly how to achieve perfection on the red carpet with the appropriate balance of sexy and classy. If I had to pick a winner, I would have to say Ashley Olsen nailed it in her vintage Christian Dior haute couture gown and Christian Louboutin pumps.

The brand showcased a total of 120 couture gowns along with artworks that have had significant influence on Dior's designs. The June cover and editorial for Vogue Japan recently surfaced, and I must say I'm quite excited to see that Naomi is back on the glossy covers of Vogue. She really knows how to pose and look completely effortless.

Inside is an editorial featuring Crystal Renn, styled by Lori Goldstein and photographed by Nathaniel Goldberg. Named "A Call for Camp," it's definitely an interesting way of mixing together patterns and accessories. It is what Vogue Nippon does well, after all.

After March madness and April exams, I'm finally back on Blogger. I'm planning to put in some serious time into blogging this summer, so get ready for it!

Anyways, to start off the summer posts, I've decided to place Kate Moss's VOGUE Paris cover. Emmanuelle Alt is really playing it safe with her cover models, first with Gisele Bundchen and now Moss. Nothing is fresh about this look - we've all seen Kate being surrounded by a group of men and she's looking more fall/winter than summer. I definitely think Alt can step it up as the new French Vogue Editor-in-chief.

Tom Binns' Fall 2011 jewelry collection has some of the most unique designs and color mixtures. Started in 2004, Tom Binns line has been expanding and earning significance in the fashion industry - in 2006, the jeweler won the Accessory Designer of the Year from the CFDA, followed by the Best Accessories Designer from the BFC. Just last year, he also received the Best Jewelry Designer award at Elle Style Awards.

Aside from such huge recognitions, Tom Binns has had his eccentric pieces featured in VOGUE and worn by celebrities like Michelle Obama and Lady Gaga. The distinguished shapes and colors of his designs are surely not for the conformists.

The 23-year old it-girl/Karl Lagerfeld's muse made her debut as the new rep for Chanel ads. She was photographed by Lagerfeld himself, and was quoted saying "I have such a respect for fashion and such an appreciation for it that if there are people like Karl Lagerfeld out there designing, who am I? I want to bow down to them and be a representative for them if they’ll have me."

I always thought Blake was gorgeous, but just not edgy enough to be the next superstar.

YSL's Belle d'Opium is banned?

In the latest ad promoting Yves Saint Laurent's Belle d'Opium fragrance, we can see French actress Melanie Thierry dancing energetically to drum beats. The Advertising Standards Authority called the ad "irresponsible" and "offensive" after receiving 13 complaints about it. It said that the ad ultimately promotes the use of drugs - opium - and contains racy material.

...Really?

How the heck does a woman in a white dress dancing alone to the drums connote opium use? YSL's spokesman clarified that the name Belle d'Opium was meant to suggest the luring seduction of women - not in any way related to the substance itself. When YSL's Opium brand launched in the '70s, people reacted negatively, and they're doing it again. Seriously, stop trying to relate everything back to drugs and other problems: this ad is simply a commercial for a fashion industry product, not a promotion of drug use in our society.

As summer ends and autumn begins, what more appropriate than to embrace the shade of fall? Just like the leaves changing color from green to auburn and yellow, it's fitting for our wardrobe to change as well.

A lot of designers showed a metallic touch to the golden hue, emphasizing that, if we're going to make it pop with gold, we might as well go all the way.

Bvlgari is Banned

When I first saw the Bvlgari ad with Julianne Moore, I couldn't help but scream "Awwwww!" It wasn't the lack of clothes on her, or even the items, but the cute little lion cubs that were comfortably cuddled near her.
I'm strangely in love with baby tigers and lions - anything of the feline sort, I really adore. So, obviously, as it probably was the case for other feline lovers, the Bvlgari ads caught my eye. I've seen them in at least five different magazines this month, and each time, I paused on the page just to admire the photos.

So I was pretty shocked to find out this morning that these ads were banned in Venice. Venice Mayor Giorgio Orsoni called the ads too racy, saying that ads showing a nude woman is "not appropriate for St. Mark's Square."

The Venice Foundation president Marino Folin dismissed the ads as Hollywood-style, saying they are for Times Square, not Venice.

I personally don't see what the big deal is. There are no inappropriately visible body parts; how can a woman sitting on a couch with two lion cubs and a high-end fashion item be so sexually provocative that it should be banned?

Fur just can't be missed out on in fall/winter. So many designers have shown a plethora of ways to wear it this season, ranging from a trapper hat to a satchel, to a vest to knee-high boots. I recently bought a vintage charcoal fur vest online and I'm stoked on getting it in the delivery soon! Personally, I prefer faux fur, but I think it's really up to your preference. Just keep in mind to educate yourself on where your real fur comes from!
